The Balloon landed in Western Germany south-east of Strasbourg the first of the Balloons to do so; the pilot, passengers, mail and 12 pigeons were all captured and imprisoned. The pilot Monsieur Delamarne was moved in January for interrogation; he managed to escape in thick fog and presented himself to the Governor of Paris on the 14th January. (Image)

J Gadala was an officer during the siege and took the time to write to his wife almost every day, these letters offer an officer's insight to the siege, showing the defiant attitude towards the situation and reveals a 'softer' side as he often writes of his longing to be with his wife and family. He end his letters very touchingly often referring to his wife as 'his good friend' and ending with 'heartily yours' (Image)

Sixty-seventh and Last Balloon of the Siege: 1871 printed Gazette des Absents (edition 32) lettersheet to Niort, franked by Napoleon III 20c Empire, tied by Star mark with Paris Rue St. Dominique cds for 27 Jan (day before the surrender!), carried on the Balloon 'General Cambronne' which departed Paris on 28 Jan hours before the armistice, backstamped with Niort datestamp for 2 Feb, slight wear to opening otherwise very fine, offered with English translation of the original contents.
The last Balloon of the Siege carried the name of mot de Cambronne, merde; with merde being a humorous and rude substitute for detritus! The Newspaper le Gaulois wrote defiantly upon the end of the war that they were ''Forced into submission, exhausted and hungry, but not defeated'' (Image)
