1870 (Sept.), SIEGE DE METZ (Papillons de Metz): two tiny pieces of tissue paper used at the town of Metz during the Franco-German War, during the siege soldiers wrote messages who were then bundled together and dropped from balloon, they fluttered to the ground like 'papillons' (french for butterflies), thus the name is derived from this fact or from the conceiver of this idea, Dr. Eugène-Ernest Papillon. The Siege of Metz lasted from 19th August to 27th October 1870 and the two offered items are from the second balloon service (Papillons du Gènie, 16th Sept. to 3rd Oct.)' without arrival cachet, very scarce items, Maury € 2.200,-- (Image)
