image LETTERS EX FRANCE TO P.O.W. IN BRISTOL BUT HELD IN PARIS "CABINET NOIR"; Fine set of 1806/07 ELs (11) unusually addressed directly to prisoners with fine Port Paye h.s.'s in black or red & most with fair or faint Paris "P.P.P.P.", charged various rates, inc. 17 Nov. 1806 EL ex Aubusson with partly fine red "P.22.P/AUBUSSON" & "22/AUBUSSON" plus partial black boxed "P.P.P.P." on the front and "15[decimes]" prepaid rate on reverse, then sent to "T.4E." (boxed mark across join) to find correct address and endorsed "Bristol"; and 4 Nov. 1812 EL endorsed "not paid" in red (at the Transport Office in London?) and charged "10[decimes]" (from Morlaix to which the cartel ship took the letter on behalf of the Transport Office) with a mainly fine "DEB. 32/BORDEAUX" on the reverse. It was then turned, readdressed to their father and reposted to Bazar (charged "4" with faint "LA TETE DE BUCH"). Most with a small piece cut out (possibly by the censor). All were clearly never delivered - these letters in transit soon after Napoleon's suspension of mail exchange from 21 Nov. 1806 are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir").
