MONACO: Early trio to Italy comprising 1) 1799 from Paris endorsed "par le Monaco" with straight-line '[...] MARSEILLES' transit b/s; 2) 1838 French entire to "Port Maurice" from Nice with merchant's cachet & 'NIZZA/11 DEC' d/s, superb strike of the rare 'MENTON' transit b/s & large-part '[PORT]O MAURIZIO/14 DIC' arrival b/s; and 3) a similar 1840 entire without the Menton transit; minor blemishes. [At the time, Nice & Monaco were within the Kingdom of Sardinia, as was Genoa of which Porto Maurizio was part. Menton was a Grimaldi possession until 1815 when it became a Sardinian protectorate.
