image 1644 (Sep 17) Entire letter from George Gansell in St. Albans, addressed "For the Right Honorable my very good Lord the Earl of Manchester these with my service", concerning a loan and payment of His Lordship's Regiment. Edward Montagu, Second Earl of Manchester, commanded a regiment of the Parliament army, capturing Horncastle, Lincoln, York and securing Lincolnshire, but was charged with neglect following the Second Battle of Newbury in October 1644, resigned his commission in 1645 and retired from public life in 1649, becoming Chancellor of Cambridge University. In 1660 he became a Privy Councillor and Lord Chancellor. A fine civil war period letter. Photo on Page 108. (Image1)

His nephew, Sir Joseph Otway, writes about the rejection of Wilson's application to the Queen's Council for a lease to Casterton Manor, a decision that evidently took a considerable time as he states it was not due to "the neglect of your sollicitude, or the calamity of the late dreadful fire" (of London, in 1666). Also a print of Edward's stately home, Dallam Tower, near Milnthorpe.
