image 1899 (19 AUG) envelope from Lokoja to London, franked by Great Britain 1d lilac tied by very fine 'LOKOJA' (type 8) oval ds in violet, with boxed 'BURUTU' (type 4) ds in violet transit at left (incorrectly dated '25 JUL 1899') the reverse with London (21.9) arrival cds. A rare cover with both datestamps, light vertical cover fold not affecting the postmarks nevertheless attractive and desirable. Carried on the River Niger service with its terminus at Burutu in the delta, from which overseas mail was transferred to the ocean port of Forcados. (Image)
