image This innovative drying book is a must for flat out soaking of stamps off paper. The “Desert Magic” Drying System utilizes a special release paper with heavy blotting pages. The release paper will not permit stamps, even those with problem gums like PVA to adhere to the drying surface. The absence of plastic interleaves shortens the time traditionally needed to dry stamps. The book contains 7 blotters with 6 release pages. 11"high. This is our jumbo version made especially for collectors requesting a higher capacity drying book. The larger format will easily accommodate blocks or souvenir sheets.

image Autograph letter, signed A. Gesner, four pages, with accompanying stampless cover, rated "4" in manuscript, to Captain The Hon. A.A. Cochrane, Her Majesty's Brig Sappho, Bermuda, West Indies, the letter referencing the Captain's famed father, Thomas Cochrane, whom Napoleon dubbed "The Sea Wolf", and discussions of he and Gesner's mutual interest in the development of petroleum products.

Gesner writes that ”I have got the patent most favourably noticed in the leading American journals..."noting also that he "shall get to trial with the gas company here in April..." and that "the [New Brunswick] asphalt melts and drops in the centre of the flame of a candle, is highly electric, and is readily dissolved in naphtha and oils...’” However, he further highlights some of the many challenges he faces, writing "I have also proved my gas apparatus - this extension of the kerosene gas progresses but you will readily perceive how we are embarrassed so long as our villainous opponents keep the Hillsboro asphalt more out of our possession..."

Legal challenges dogged Gesner throughout his attempts to obtain patents, but the company he founded - the North American Kerosene Gas Light Co, was eventually purchased by Standard Oil.

An exceptional letter from one of the primary founders of the petroleum industry, illuminating his relationship with one of the most renowned British naval commanders of the nineteenth century.
