The stamp, imperforate at left and at top, is from position 1 on the sheetlet of 10 subjects (5 x 2). Very rare, only 1,000 printed, just a handful of covers are known: the addressee, Bert Lowe, was an old-time gold prospector and bridge tender at Spillimachine, a town on the river between the lake and Golden. image 1927 (May 20): Airmail envelope from St. John's New Foundland to Naples bearing 60 c. black, well centered and overprinted "AIR MAIL DE PINEDO 1927" in red, tied by meter obliterator of St. John's, Trepassey (May 21) departure cds alongside, reverse with "ROMA CENTRO 22.VI.1927 LE PIU BELLE TERME DEL MONDO SALSOMAGGIORE PERIODO DI CURA MARZO-NOVEMBRE" advertising slogan datestamp and '59' Napoli distribution handstamp. Tear in the cover at lower left well away from stamp and postmarks, nevertheless a fine and desirable example of this rare Airmail item. Signed E. Diena, cert. Bolaffi (2004) Sc = $ 25'000. rnNote: One of about 225 covers with an overprinted Newfoundland 60 c. stamp flown on the transatlantic flight attempted by Marquis Francesco de Pinedo between Trepassey, Newfoundland, and Rome, Italy, via the Azores. De Pinedo left Newfoundland on May 23, 1927, but a shortage of fuel caused his plane to land in the ocean, 200 miles from the Azores.
