Sale No: 856

image 1853 1p Red Brown on Blue Wove Paper, Imperforate An extraordinary mint block of four with fabulous colour, showing its original "bloom" as the day it was printed, margins are clear to unusually large all around, hinged twice with remarkably full original gum; displaying superior physical traits that are rarely seen on early issues of Nova Scotia. image 1857 6p Dark Green on Bluish Wove Paper, Imperforate An extraordinary mint single with deep vivid colour, completely devoid of the usual flaws that plague this fragile stamp, its outstanding quality is further accentuated by four full margins, a remarkably clear impression and large part original gum. Only a miniscule number (in any condition) can be found with any amount of OG. An extremely rare mint stamp, often described as one of the rarest mint stamps in all of British North America. In fact (see census below) only the Reford mint OG example can rival this fabulous VF OG stamp. A seriously undercatalogued stamp, especially in this quality.

Expertization: 1963 Alberto Diena certificate; stamp also pencil signed by him

Census: After thorough examination of numerous name sales of the past we were able to get a better idea of its true rarity. Items listed are in no particular order; observations based on their respective lot descriptions and images.

(1) ex. Philipp La Renotière von Ferrary (Sale I, June 1921; Lot 103) unused, full margins
(2) ex. Senator Calder (February 1958) just clear margins, ironed crease
(3) ex. Captain Vivian Hewitt (December 1968; Lot 1306), Weill Brothers (November 1989; Lot 1649), "Skywalk" (September 2016; Lot 57), full margins, unused with traces of original gum, thin specks
(4) ex. Dr. Lewis L. Reford (Part Five, October 1951; Lot 1256), small margins, mint OG
(5) ex. Alfred Caspary (October 1956; Lot 458), Josiah Lilly (Part VIII, May 1968; Lot 380), "Halifax" (October 1984; Lot 1104), William Gross (November 2009; Lot 328), first offered as mint part OG in first two sales, as unused in the Gross sale, all mention small thins
(6) ex. E. Carey Fox (First Portion, May 1968; Lot 184) unused (no gum), full margins
(7) The example offered here (Highlands) full to large margins, mint OG
(8) ex. Edward Granger (October 1958; Lot 410) just clear margins, unused, small thin spot
(9) ex. Eno (March 1959; Lot 217), Frederick Mayer (May 2004; Lot 555), "Malibu" (May 2006; Lot 211 - realized US$28,000) small margins, mint OG, first two sales mentions small thin spot
(10) ex. Nicholas Argenti (November 1963; Lot 421), Claude Cartier (Part One, April 1977; Lot 93), clear to full margins, mint OG, small thin, slight wrinkling - oddly enough described as sound in Argenti sale.
(11) ex. "Provenance" (January 1983; Lot 2052), Frederick Mayer (May 2004; Lot 556, small to full margins, unused (no gum)
(12) ex. Maurice Burrus (November 1962; Lot 1141) full margins mint OG, thinned
(13) ex. Warren Wilkinson (March 2011; Lot 10137) just clear to touching design on one side, unused (no gum)
(14) ex. Dale-Lichtenstein (Sale 5, May 1969; Lot 959) large margins, unused, small thin under regumming
(15) ex. Dale-Lichtenstein (Sale 2, November 1968) full margins, unused, slight crease
(16) ex. William Moody (May 1951; Lot 372) mint OG, cut into on two sides, tiny age stains

It is also interesting to note that Nicholas Argenti, author and avid collector of Nova Scotia & New Brunswick, was only able to locate four unused examples in any condition; three of which were in private hands - two in Dale-Lichtenstein sales and his own copy. Further to our observations, several famous collectors such as Amundsen, Kanai, Foxbridge (John DuPont) and Sir Gawaine Baillie were unable to find an unused example (sound or otherwise) for their collections.

A TRULY REMARKABLE VERY FINE MINT ORIGINAL GUM EXAMPLE WHICH HAS RESIDED IN THIS IMPORTANT COLLECTION FOR DECADES. THE SIX PENCE DARK GREEN IN MINT CONDITION HAS BEEN HAILED AS ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF BRITISH NORTH AMERICA.

image 13½ cent rate 1865 (August 1) Small white envelope mailed from Pugwash to Newfoundland with an exceptionally rare and most striking franking consisting of a single 12½c black alongside a diagonal bisect of the 2c greyish purple, paying the very rare Interior of Nova Scotia to Newfoundland 13½ cent letter rate; this cover is believed to be the only such reported franking (to anywhere). Stamps with slight imperfections as to be excepted due to placement on the cover, both tied by light mute grid cancel; on reverse a very clear Pugwash AU 1 1865 double arc dispatch, "H" (Halifax) AU 2 and St. John's Newfoundland AU 7 transits and a Harbour Grace receiver lightly struck on obverse. A wonderful cover destined for a serious collection, VF (Unitrade 9b, 13)

We would like to point out the very rare instance of this 13½c franking; the vast majority are invariably franked with a 12½c and a 1c stamp. All other usages of the 2c bisect are, to the best of our knowledge, shown on 5 cent domestic rate covers together with two examples of the 2 cent.

image 36½ cent rate 1865 (March 30) A visually striking cover to Calcutta, India, franked with horizontal strip of three of the 12½c black on yellowish wove paper, light horizontal crease and perf flaws due to proximity to edge of envelope, unusually cancelled by Cunard Steamship "A93" (or "A95") grid cancels; minor edge wear to cover but a rare triple 12½ cent Trans-Atlantic letter rate, paid to England with London AP 10 65 Paid CDS postmark in red. Rate markings along with Bombay MY 11 and Calcutta GPO CDS in red suggest postage from England to India had to be paid by the recipient. image $1.25 rate 1862 (June 3) A truly spectacular legal envelope sent registered to Adelaide, South Australia, via England, bearing two singles and a horizontal strip of eight of the 12½ cent black, grid cancelled, light Halifax double arc dispatch on reverse; the strip further tied by superb "Crown" REGISTERED handstamps in red while in transit along with two other strikes and same-ink oval Registered London 23 JU 62 datestamp, G.P.O. Adelaide AU 16 struck on arrival. A few faults including minor tears in stamps and cover, more apparent on the latter - of the utmost rarity and with great appeal. Without equal as this is THE LARGEST KNOWN FRANKING on cover and among the greatest Nova Scotia Decimal Era covers extant; paying an incomparable five-fold (5 X 23 cents) letter rate to Australian States, plus the 10 cent registration fee. One of the highlights of Nova Scotia philately. (Unitrade 13)

After extensive research, we located a $1.60 franking comprised solely of 10 cent stamps, but affixed to a damaged piece ex. Dale-Lichtenstein, Sale 7, Lot 552
