image 1884 Australian tour to England George Alexander's accounts book (110x150mm) for the 1884 Tour of England, endorsed on the accompanying vellum wallet 'The Australian Eleven' with 32 hand-written pages detailing receipts and expenditures between 26.4.1884 & 10.12.1884. An historically important, truly exceptional & unique item of sporting memorabilia. Gideon Haigh, in '200 Years of Australian Cricket 1804 to 2004' wrote "The jubilation of England over its win in the exciting second Test at Lord's has given way to anger with news that the Australian team is making all the money. The Australians have taken the entire proceeds from the match, £1334, while the England professionals were paid £10 per man..." The contract was negotiated by George Alexander and the England captain, Lord Harris. Alexander had made it clear that the tourists depended on the money to cover costs, because the Australians shared the gate at county grounds and boosted the county clubs' funds. The 'arrangement' was most rewarding: each member of the touring party pocketed £900, and was set for life! (Image1)
