image MONEY LETTERS. 1826 Stampless PERTH to YORK, Pre-Manuscript Money Letter part cover, PERTH straight-line h/s in black. Rated 11d cy in black, (single rate for 201 – 300 miles). No external ref to “Cash” or triple/double-rate as Leslie had done previously in 1823 & 1825– [see Lussey 1998, p 1 (¾ oz) & 3]. To the Honorable John H Dunn, H M Receiver General, York. Docketed “Perth 26th May 1826, Anthony Leslie Esq, Inspector enclosing £45.10, Currency on a/c of Duties” & “Rec’d and acknowledged on the 7th June ensuing”. Mills PM and E.L. ..ston APM. Addressed to postmaster Charles Berczy Esq, Toronto. Endorsed on back “... and others paid to C Berczy 18 Jany 39...” Letter re remittance of US postage from Delaware, likely in cash, hence money letter endorsement. Berczy re-folded the letter, signed it at LL and addressed it to C Hamilton, Esq, P.M. Queenston, the proper recipient, where exchanges to US took place. No other postal markings. Endorsed by the writer “Money” & “Paid” in black m/s, PAID h/s in black & M (= money), rated 3/6 in red (three times 1/2 rate for 301 – 400 miles). To Jules Quesnel Esq, Montreal. Docketed “Cash £12-10-. John S Baldwin 29th April 1839. Statement from 5th Feby to 29th April”. Content is just the statement of transactions with letter removed. Jules-Maurice Quesnel & John Spread Baldwin were business partners involved with imports & exports. Quesnel had been a fur trader and became a politician. File folds and tear at seal. (Image)

Rare new report of manuscript postmark “G.P.O. Quebec” at LL, free-rated between postmasters, but not marked, to J.S. HOWARD Esq, PM, Toronto City. Letter is on post office business, enclosing a letter for Mrs Anne ??, re delivery of a Dead Letter in London. Also, ref to “a robbery of the whole of the Upper Canada Mail on its way from Prescott to Cornwall was perpetrated on the night of 17th February, as I think I have already informed you. I send you one of my Hand Bills that you may put it up in your office lobby. I shall prosecute the Contractor and his ?guarantors? for the penalty of their bond (£1500) and thus I hope teach a salutary lesson to all persons who undertake Mail Contracts and fail in taking proper precautions for the security of the Mails”.
