Mail Boat Obliterations / Abyssinian Campaign 1867 (Dec): India 1866 4 a. green, Die I, in a horizontal pair tied to 1867 cover to Avranches, France endorsed 'via Marseilles' cancelled by sender's initials and by bold strike of P & O Mailboat "C79" obliterator and by part oval 'PD' applied with 'London / Paid' cds in red (Dec 2?). Carried by the 'S.S. Mongolia' with British P.O. SUEZ transit cds in blue (Dec 16). Reverse with Paris transit and Avranches arrival cds (Dec 29). One of very few covers known prior to the setting up of the Field Post Office in June 1868. Superb quality and most attractive.rnNote: Mailed from Lieut. C.B. Smith of the Madras Infantry, attached to the first wave of 1'500 troops landed at Annersley Bay, Gulf of Zula for the Campaign, he had arrived on the 'Star of India' in Annersley Bay on Dec 5, 1867. South Line 1811 (April 30): Entire letter written at Goa, Portuguese India to Lisbon, Portugal endorsed "Pello Navio Europa", the entire travelled via Cape Town and thence across the Atlantic to Rio de Janeiro, where delivered to the Brazilian Post Office and struck with superb "Rº. DEJANRº" struck in red-brown. Thence carried via the Portuguese South Line to Lisbon where charged '80' reis due in manuscript and on to Lixa. Internal docketing of receipt (Oct 15).
