image EAST AFRICA & UGANDA: 1907 remarkable usage of KEVII ½a Postal Card with the message in French headed "Kamindi (N du lac Edward)/le 21 Decembre 06" & endorsed at lower-left by a Belgian Military Adjutant, to Belgium with EA&U ½a added & tied by 'FORT-PORTAL/JA2/07/+U.P+' cds, 'ENTEBBE JA8/07/U.P' transit & part-arrival cds of 6/FEVR/07, minor blemishes. [From the eastern border of Belgian Congo, the Indian Ocean was closer than the Atlantic. The remoteness of the area is highlighted by the 13 days it took to travel only about 100km from the north of Lake Edward further north to Fort Portal, & a further 6 days to reach Entebbe 150km to the ESE, across mountains, jungle & extensive swamplands]

[Ted Proud notes that in 1885 only Suakin & Wadi Halfa Camp post offices were open. 10 more were open by 1891 but no markings have been recorded from any of them. [Koki, or Kooki, was an independent kingdom until 1896 when it was absorbed into Uganda. The almost 2 months in transit to Mombasa highlights the remoteness of the region. The sender was the missionary Richard Henry Leakey, father of Louis Leakey who, with his wife Mary, and their son Richard Erskine Leakey were all famous anthropologists in Kenya]
