EAST AFRICA & UGANDA: 1907 remarkable usage of KEVII ½a Postal Card with the message in French headed "Kamindi (N du lac Edward)/le 21 Decembre 06" & endorsed at lower-left by a Belgian Military Adjutant, to Belgium with EA&U ½a added & tied by 'FORT-PORTAL/JA2/07/+U.P+' cds, 'ENTEBBE JA8/07/U.P' transit & part-arrival cds of 6/FEVR/07, minor blemishes. [From the eastern border of Belgian Congo, the Indian Ocean was closer than the Atlantic. The remoteness of the area is highlighted by the 13 days it took to travel only about 100km from the north of Lake Edward further north to Fort Portal, & a further 6 days to reach Entebbe 150km to the ESE, across mountains, jungle & extensive swamplands]
GOLD COAST: 1908 stampless cover with 'GOVERNMENT HOUSE/ACCRA' on the flap, endorsed "Free" & signed at L/L "John Rodger", 'VICTORIABORG/JUL22/1908/GOLD COAST' cds & 'SEKONDI/[crown] JUL23/1908/GP;D COAST' arrival b/s, with the enclosed matching notelet with '[crown]/GOVERNOR GOLD COAST/[coat-of-arms]', the message also signed "John Rodger". RHODESIA: 1895 (July 27) 'The Nugget' 8pp newspaper No 1 Vol 1 being a mimeographed version of the hand-written original, fragile with internal splitting but quite legible & presentable; 1898 (July 9) 'The Nugget & Rhodesian Critic' No 123 Vol V now typeset; 1884 folio score for 'The Good Hope Valse' by A Witte for the 1884 South African Industrial Exhibition and 1910 'Pageant of South Africa' mimeographed score from the handwritten original. Rare documents. [The Handwritten Newspapers Project notes 'The Nugget' first appeared 11.11.1890. Perhaps it folded (pardon the pun!) & was reborn in 1895]

SUDAN: 1896 OHMS cover endorsed "Active Service no stamps procurable" & signed at L/L "WE Harper [?] pro OC/ASC/Germai", to a military address in Hampshire with very fine bilingual 'WADI-HALFA CAMP/4SE96 TI/...' cds (Proud #D1; ERD) & boxed 'T' h/s (not recorded by Proud), British '1D/F.B.' tax h/s & 'ALDERSHOT/SE18/96' arrival b/s, small piece of the flap missing. [Ted Proud notes that in 1885 only Suakin & Wadi Halfa Camp post offices were open. 10 more were open by 1891 but no markings have been recorded from any of them. British Forces had been roundly defeated in 1885. The Dongola Campaign of 1895-96 saw the British re-capture most of the Sudan. Gemai was about 20km SW of Wadi Halfa]
SUDAN: 1897 two covers from Wadi Halfa to military addresses in Egypt with 'SOUDAN' Overprints 5m or 1m + 5m tied by superb bilingual 'HALFA/...' cds of 22 VII 97 or 13 X 97 the first with 'MILITARY/POST OFFICE/27 VII 97/AEXANDRIA' arrival b/s, the other with 'CAIRE/23 X 97/...' arrival b/s. UGANDA: 1897 missionary's cover endorsed on the flap "Koki/Uganda/18.4.97" & initialled at L/L "RHL", to London with scarce combination franking of Uganda Typeset 4a black SG 58 (Cat £40 x20+ on cover) tied by manuscript "X" in blue plus BEA ½a & 2a SG 65 & 67 tied by 'MOMBASA/JU12/97' squared-circles, London 'BEDFORD ST (SO) WC/JY10/97/ 1 ' arrival b/s, very minor blemishes. [Koki, or Kooki, was an independent kingdom until 1896 when it was absorbed into Uganda. The almost 2 months in transit to Mombasa highlights the remoteness of the region. The sender was the missionary Richard Henry Leakey, father of Louis Leakey who, with his wife Mary, and their son Richard Erskine Leakey were all famous anthropologists in Kenya]
