(7.9), in combination with France "Chine" 25c, canceled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (7.11), the 4c stamp has small faults due to application at the edge of the cover, addressed in the hand of Archibald Little, the founder of the Chungking Local Post system—which by this time had been closed for nearly four years—to his daughter. Nanking
Sale No: 38
Lot No: 101
Symbol: C
Cat No: 1896.1214

image image 1896 (Dec. 14), Japan 2s Postal Card used from Nanking to New York, via Shanghai, Yokohama and San Francisco, showing bilingual oval origin datestamp in violet, 14 Dec 1896, with "Shanghai/Local Post" transit c.d.s. in red, the indicia canceled by "Shanghai/I.J.P.O." c.d.s. (both 16.12); there was apparently a 1c Nanking Local Post stamp applied at lower—subsequently removed—that was tied by a San Francisco Paid All c.d.s.; New York receiver dated Jan 24 97, Very Fine,

The Nanking datestamp is rare when utilized as a Postage Paid marking; however, the Nanking Local Post stamps were issued in late Sept. 1896. The order of the date in the Nanking datestamp corresponds to the stamp era. The pre-adhesive marking reads month, day, year.

image image 1866, Large Dragon (Antique Numerals, "CANDAREENS" plural), 6ca red brown, wove paper, printing 58 (Livingston 31. Scott 21. Chan LS18), complete sheet of 6, the third stamp variety dramatically placed impression struck well below the others; two light vertical creases, one crossing the fifth stamp, without gum as issued, a Very Fine and remarkable variety,

Although the stamps were handpress-printed one at a time from a single die, considerable care was taken in their application to the format in a sheet of six, and therefore only a handful of such misplaced impressions are recorded. The two most spectacular examples appear in an 8 Candareens printing 32 strip of four from the Newbury and Chow Wei-Liang collections and the above 6 Candareens sheet. See Jeffrey S. Schneider, ed., China's First Postage Stamps. The Enlarged "Dim Sum" Collection of Shanghai Large Dragons, Jane and Dan Sten Olsson, p. 180.
