Franklin Ohlinger had served as a missionary under the Methodist Episcopal Church Foreign Mission Board in Foochow since 1870 and established the Union Theological School there in 1871. While on furlough in the United States in 1876, he married Bertha Schwenifurth, and both returned to Foochow later in the same year. In 1887, the Ohlingers were reassigned to Korea, and they eventually went back to the United States in 1893. Later in 1894, Franklin returned to Hinghua as an independent missionary, where he founded the Rebecca McCabe Orphanage. After being reinstated as a Methodist missionary in 1897, his wife Bertha rejoined him in China in 1899, where she served as the Orphanage's Superintendent.
