1862 (Jan) cover with a superb strike on the reverse of the stupendous 83mm seal of the Nepalese Commander-in-Chief Krishna Bahadur centrally inscribed in Devanagari & Persian & around the rim 'SREEISTODEBTAHCHURN/ KRISNOBAHADORECOOMARSHURN', to India with fine strike of the double- circle 'NEPAUL/4/JAN/1862/P. O' cds & small 'BENARES/JA9/62' arrival cds both in red, roughly opened on the face & the Indian stamp(s) removed. [Almost 10 months earlier than Wolfgang Hellrigl's similar cover - also repaired on the face & with the stamp(s) removed - that sold for SFr288]
1863 tiny flimsy unstamped cover with largely superb 'E.X./CALCUTTA/G P O/JU29/1863' cda & boxed 'CAL GPO/BG 1 ANNA' h/s in black, to the Rana Family in Kathmandu, fine double-circle 'NEPAUL/3/JUL/1863/P . O' arrival cds in black, remarkably fine for this class of material.
1867 tiny flimsy cover to India with East India ½a tied by scarce double-circle 'NEPAUL/3MR/67 - 137' duplex (numeral within diagonal bars), superb strike of the rare boxed 'TOOLATE' h/s (one word) on the reverse with largely superb strike of 'TRA...TJUN GPO/ No2/7 MAY/ JB /BENGAL' transit & poor Benares arrival b/s in red, opened-out for display.
1883 usage of Indian ½a Envelope with largely superb 'D'-in-Bars 'killer' of the Bihar Circle & similar quality 24½mm 'NEPAL./SEP:21' b/s, to "Mutiharee" with light but clear 'FIRST DELY/MOTIHAREE/SEP24' arrival b/s, minor fault at lower-left otherwise very fine. [In the late-1870s, Indian post offices were assigned to one of 12 Postal Circles. All post offices within the Bihar Circle (headquartered at Dinapore), including Kathmandu, were assigned a 'D'-in-bars 'killer'. The origin of an article can therefore be determined only from the despatch datestamp. In this period, India also instituted the strange policy of removing the year from all datestamps]
The illustration is above Lot 1927.
1884 stampless cover from India to "HH the Maharaja Sir Runoo/dupsingha Rana Bahadoor/Primeminister and Commandert in Chief Nepaul" with very fine to superb backstamps of 'BAGHBAZAR/CALCUTTA /21NOV84' b/s, 'THIRD DELY/MUTIHAREE/22NOV84' transit & 24½mm 'NEPAL27NOV84' arrival plus boxed 'POSTAGE DUE/("2as")' handstamp (Type B57; the earliest of the Postage Due handstamps), ironed-out vertical fold clear of the Nepal markings.
1891 usage of stampless 'On Postal Service/EAST INDIA POST CARD' in pale green/white to 'The Commanding Officer/9th B.I. [= Bengal Infantry]/Durenda" with a superb strike of the scarce 19mm 'thimble' cds inscribed 'NFPAL/JA2/91', transit of '[...]OWLIE' & 'DURENDA/6JA/91' arrival cds, minor clipped corner & rather spotty. [Wolfgang Hellrigl informs that the misspelling was a graving error & not the result of wear or damage. The cds was corrected or replaced later in 1891. The message states that "a registered cover...containing a reservist notice..." to a member of the Thapa Family "has not been delivered owing to the place being far off in the hills..."]
1901 usage of Indian 'ONE/ANNA' on 2a6p Envelope uprated on the reverse with ½a x4 all tied by 'NEPAL/13AP/01' squared-circles, to "Bank of Bengal/Calcutta" with superb large-part strike of the boxed 'REGISTERED/NEPAL/[N] W ' handstamp inscribed "NO 542" in violet below, poor Calcutta arrival b/s of 16AP01, minor blemishes.
1904-07 covers x3 & postal stationery Envelopes x4 with all-different 'NEPAL' postmarks comprising Swiss bridge-pattern cds x2 (one with 'NFPAL', caused by damage), 'NEPAL/1ST DELY' 25mm (with oval 'UNPAID/ MOTIHARI' h/s in green) or 24½mm (registered), 'NEPAL/2ND DELY' with 2-line date or 1-line date, & 'NEPAL/3RD DELY' with 1-line date (rare), the strikes all fine to superb.
1925-28 usages of 31½mm cds on 1) 1925 stampless 'On Postal Service' pre-UPU 'Acknowledgment' of receipt of registered letter also with 'NEPAL'-in-Box & 'KATMANDU'-in-oval handstamps; 2) 1927 Registration Receipt; & 3) 1928 'A.R. Receipt for Inland or foreign Telegrams'; minor imperfections. Scarce.
