[Hellrigl & Vignola state at page 105 "A variety of the Second State of this heavily used plate is..the so-called 'cleaned lettering' showing large white patches around the letters of the inscriptions..."]

image ONE ANNA: 1a pale emerald Error of Colour Setting 27 SG unlisted (F&V 18b) marginal block of 6 [6-8/14-16] from the top of the sheet, [15] Inverted creating a Tete-Beche Pair (F&V 18ba), margins good to large, remarkably fine, crescent-cancels of Birganj largely clear of [15], Cat US$2500+. Superb. Wolfgang Hellrigl Certificate (1985). In a footnote below SG 29a, Gibbons mention the error of colour of the 1a green as a single cliché SG 41b in a sheet of 4a green, but make no mention of sheets of the 1a in the colour of the 4a. Hellrigl & Vignola state at page 106 state "It should be emphasised that the emerald printings of Setting 27 and the substituted cliché are two totally distinct errors of colour".

image TWO ANNAS: Selection on Julie Marshall's exhibit pages with a remarkable variety of colours & shades - although nothing we consider to be "red" - SG 37-40a group (F&V 19/a) including Stg 20 printings of 1905-06 in lilac & purple including horizontal & vertical Tete-Beche Pairs & an irregular block of 25 (8x3 + one unit at upper-right), Stgs 22-31 printings in brown-red to maroon including four Tete-Beche Pairs (one [47-48] in a block of 4) & a further five Tete-Beche Pairs in a block of 16 [1-8/9-16], printings in pale brown to sepia including four Tete-Beche Pairs and upper-left corner block of 9 [1-3/9-11/17-19] with a blank position [9] & two vertical Tete-Beche Pairs [10/18] & [11/19], generally very fine to superb, Cat £2300+ (US$1450+). A remarkable lot. [We agree that the major shade groups should be amalgamated in the catalogues. There are at least three distinct colour groups in the 2a, but they are all lumped together by Frajola & Vignola]

image TWO ANNAS: 2a brown SG 40 (F&V 19) Setting 29 complete sheet of 56 (8x7) with two blank positions [1] & [9] and [8 14 15 18 19 & 48] all Inverted resulting in six horizontal or vertical Tete-Beche Pairs SG 40a (F&V 19a), the sheet margins removed resulting in several units being touched or a little cut-into on one side but most units are very fine, crescent cancels of Birganj, Cat £760++ (US$720++). Another remarkable feature of this item is the shade variation across the sheet, from dark brown at right to pale brown at left.

Again, the intensity of the shades varies across the sheet. [Hellrigl & Vignola state at page 148 "[Setting 31 was] prepared for issue but, we believe, never issued..." Wolfgang Hellrigl's similar sheet, in a deeper shade, sold for SFr720]

image FOUR ANNAS: 4a bright green SG 41 Setting 12 complete sheet of 64 with large sheet margins, Pos [8] is the 1a Error of Colour which is also Inverted! SG 41b creating a horizontal Tete-Beche Pair [7-8 ](F&V 18ca), Unit [56; the 'Blob of Colour] has also been substituted & is also inverted creating a horizontal Tete-Beche Pair [55-56], in addition [54] & [57] are inverted creating a further two Tete-Beche Pairs, Unit [57] stained from a large paper inclusion otherwise very fine to superb unused, Cat £3650++ (US$5800++). Richard Frajola's corner pair [7-8] sold for US$501. [Note: Gibbons list the Error of Colour, but they neither list nor price it in a tete-beche pair]
