1915 (May 26) usage of USA Washington 2c red envelope with Dan Patch Novelty Co (Indiana) 'corner card', to "Oscar Blau ... Sidney" [sic] without added franking and taxed with 'CENTIMES/30/T' h/s, at Sydney 'OPENED BY CENSOR' purple/transparent cream resealing label applied at left and Postage Dues Perf 11 1dstrip of 3 (lower unit with minor corner fault) affixed on face tied by cds, minor blemishes.
1915 (Aug 17) Fred Hagen (stamp dealer) double-rate registered cover to Massachusetts with scarce combination franking of NSW 2d blue and Kangaroo Second Wmk 6d deep ultramarine ACSC 18B (Cat $3000 for non-solo use on cover) tied by Sydney cds with red R label, US 'REGISTERED' & '79743' h/s in purple on face, various transits & two different Boston arrival b/s, minor blemishes.
1916 (June 11) usage of KGV 1d Sideface Lettercard ('Mt Buffalo'), to a soldier in "D Company 1st Pioneer Battalion, 1st Australian Division, AIF Abroad", lengthy personal message, endorsed "Wounded 4/8/16" on face but apparently delivered to addressee, a couple of minor blemishes.
1916 (July 30) Ceylon PPC with message headed "Barracks/Colombo", stampless OAS usage to Victoria with a fine strike of the rare 'TRANSPORT/CENSOR/COLOMBO' h/s in blue.
1918 printed POW Envelope endorsed on the flap "B Laeschke, Bourke/NSW", unusually unsealed to Switzerland with 'BERN/18.III.18/BRIEFTRAGER' arrival b/s. Rare. [Bourke Internment Camp was a small facility at Bourke Gaol that housed German nationals deported from Malaya Ceylon Fiji & Hong Kong. Opened in 1915, in 1918 the inmates were moved to Molonglo Camp]
1918 (Aug 22) illustrated advertising cover for Canada Cycle & Motor Agency Qld to Michigan with KGV Single Wmk 1d red x3 tied by Brisbane 'QUEENSLAND/HELP TO WIN THE WAR/...' slogan cancel, very minor blemishes. The rate was 2½d but the ½d convenience overpayment could be seen as being in anticipation of the ½d War Tax introduced two months later.
1918 & 1919 POW lettersheets with internal heading in German 87mm or 70mm Long, from different senders at Liverpool (NSW) Camp both to Germany with Lieut-Colonel Holman cachet in blue (unusual) or violet.

1921 (Dec 2) 'OHMS/WAR MEDAL ONLY' linen-lined envelope with Victoria Barracks Sydney imprint at lower-left, to Yass with Kangaroos Third Wmk 6d grey-blue punctured 'OS' (ACSC 19E; Cat $800, for solo franking on cover) tied by Sydney cds, tiny fastening hole below the stamp, minor blemishes. Ex Kevin Nelson: sold for $930 at our auction of 27.11.2010. The merchandise rate was 1½d per 2oz x2 = 3d + 3d registration. [Such items were sent with the flap unsealed but secured with a metal fastener. Most such envelopes have multiple creases]
1922 (Jan 16) Dalgety & Co entire advertising poster (1210x760mm) for the sale of Coriyule Estate of 1219 acres subdivided into 12 allotments on the Bellarine Peninsula, folded to large letter size and posted to Geelong with KGV 1d red tied by 'CURLEWIS/VIC' cds (ERD; rated RRR), damage at the corners, minor peripheral tears & some separation along the folds all repaired with archival tape. The Printed Matter rate was 1d per 2oz, with no requirement to pay the ½d War Tax required for other classes of mail. An extraordinary postal history item. Curlewis PO 1.11.1866; closed 30.6.1973. [Built in 1849 for Anne Drysdale after whom the adjoining town takes its name, Coriyule Homestead is the oldest & one of the finest residences on the Bellarine Peninsular. It was designed by the celebrated colonial architect Charles Laing]
1930 (Sep 16) cover with Commonwealth Coat-of-Arms in blue on the flap by air to Canberra with scarce franking of punctured 'OS' 3d Air Type A and KGV SMult Wmk Perf 13½x12½ 1d green pair tied by very fine 25mm 'DARWIN/NT' cds, Sydney transit b/s. [Arthur Blakely was a prominent trade unionist who was active in the anti-conscription movement during WWI. Elected to Federal Parliament, between 1929 & 1932 he was Minister for Home Affairs, with responsibility for the ACT]
1931-42 'PARCELS POST' labels on pieces including 1937 with Kangaroo CofA Wmk 2/- 'VG' Puncture solo, undated with KGV CofA 1/4d blue + Kangaroo 2/- tied by large '[CHI]EF PARCELS OFF[ICE]' rubber h/s, undated with KGV SMWmk 2d brown + Kangaroos 2/- pair tied by similar but different h/s, 1936 with Kangaroos CofA Wmk 9d & 2/-, 1940 label with 1/- Lyrebird on complete Rudduck & Co 'Red Duck' parcel tag, two pieces with Kangaroo/KGV Heads frankings tied by the 'CHIEF PARCELS OFFICE/MELBOURNE' rubber h/s (one a very scarce complete strike), generally fine to very fine. 1963 (May 7) Dunlopillo business reply postcard returned unfranked from Brisbane with Flowers 1/6d Christmas Bells affixed in lieu of Postage Dues tied by Bankstown, NSW cds to pay postage due on three articles at 6d each (5d postcard rate plus 1d reply mail fee), Cat $300 for solo usage.
1965 social airmail usage of PPC to Hong Kong with Anzac 8d blue solo franking tied by Burwood (Vic) machine cancel of 28APR/1965, not well looked after but rarely seen.
1966 cover with Christmas 5d but taxed as overweight and Birds 6d Thornbill affixed in lieu of Postage Dues & tied by Nanango (Qld) cds, Cat $150 for solo usage of the 6d Bird. The domestic letter rate was 5d up to ½oz and 8d for over ½oz up to 1oz; the item was charged double the 3d deficiency.
1966 (April 18) cover to Victoria with illegal franking of NSW Stamp Duty 3c tied by Quirindi (NSW) machine cancel, boxed 'T ("8c")' in violet, 8c Coral Fish affixed in lieu of Postage Dues tied by Melbourne cds. [The invalid stamp was not noted locally, which would have been indicated by a box drawn around the 'stamp' which was to remain uncancelled to show that it had not been accepted as paying postage]
1969 (Oct 2) commercial airmail cover to "Christmas Island Pacific Ocean" with scarce solo franking of 8c Fish tied by Sydney slogan & one of three strikes of the rarely seen 'CANCELLED/INTERCEPTED AT/REQUEST OF SENDER/...' h/s in violet, minor blemishes. A great combination of a scarce franking, a marvellous destination & a little-used service.
1973 (Mar 8) family cover to Germany with 'OVERSEAS/EXPRESS/DELIVERY' label & rare solo franking of Captain Cook 75c tied by Sydney GPO cds, 'FRANKFURT AM MAIN FLUGHAFEN/10.3.73' arrival b/s. [Superior quality & aesthetics to a similar 1972 cover to England that sold at our Online Auction of 20.5.2021 for $1355]

UTOPIAN SETTLEMENT: 1930 philatelic cover to "Colonia Nueva Australia" with Paraguay 1p & 1p50c tied by diamond 'ENSAYO/SERVICIO/SEREO/INTERNO' cachet, double-ring 'COLONIA NVA AUSTRALIA/ 5SET1930/PARAGUAY' arrival cds on both sides. [New Australia was founded in 1893 as a utopian socialist settlement of 238 people. It propunded an odd mix of communism, monogamy, teetolalism & white racial purity. The experiment failed but there are still some 2000 descendants of the founders living in Paraguay]
VIETNAM WAR: 1965 (Dec 18) long cover with boxed 'RAAF TRANSPORT FLIGHT' h/s at L/L, to Australia with Birds 6d Thornbill solo franking tied by 'AUST FPO/ 1 ' cds used at Saigon and 'DEFENCE FORCES/16/POSTAGE CONCESSION' cachet alongside, minor edge faults on back. Although not endorsed, the item paid the Forces Concession 6d per ½oz airmail rate for carriage by RAAF transport. A short-lived & very scarce usage of the 6d Bird (Cat $150 for solo).
VIETNAM WAR: 1966 (Nov 30) large-part parcel wrapper registered to Australia with 10c Fish & 30c Ibis tied by 'AUST FPO/ 4 ' cds used at Nui Dat, "R/AFPO 4" hand-drawn boxed 'cachet', Australian Customs form (cut on opening) affixed on face declaring contents of "2 Sets Photo Slides/2 Lighters", some folds & blemishes. The Forces Concession surface parcel rate was 20c up to 2oz + 20c registration fee.
