1d red extensive collection of plated examples from the eight panes with many positions represented across various shades & both papers, no Pre-Substituted Clichés but including Substituted Clichés IV/34 x38 (two punctured 'OS' & one with 'JCH' perfin) & IV/35 x39 (three punctured 'OS'), Thin 'G' x10 & Pregnant 'Y' x27, etc etc, condition variable but the majority are fine to very fine. In addition to the ACSC-listed material, there is a wealth of other varieties, many of which are very scarce, recorded in the accompanying BSAP Checklist. We also noted many perf 'OS' & some Watermark Inverted examples, and little attempt has been made to assess the shades. Ex 'Anglo-Saxon', with numerous items also Ex Charles Hosking, many of which are accompanied by his notes &/or diagrams. A remarkable lot that has taken many years to assemble. Weighs 7kg. 1d orange-red Smooth Paper Watermark Inverted ACSC 71Pa, Cat $750, Scott Starling Certificate (2020) states "a fine and fresh example of a rare shade combination".
Smooth Paper 1d salmon eosin ACSC 71S, very well centred, lightly cancelled, Cat $1800. Superb! [It's a mystery why the most important & obvious shades in one of the most important issues for the entire British Empire aren't listed by Gibbons]
Smooth Paper 1d scarlet-red Die II ACSC 71G(1)i (SG 21d), well centred, unmounted, Cat $1250+ (£475+, for mounted). Michael Drury Certificate (2014) as the then ACSC 71G(1)f.
Rough Paper 1d rose-red (aniline) complete strip of 12 from the base of Panes VII & VIII with 'CA' & 'JBC' Monogram strips of 3 ACSC 72(4)z & zb with 'RA' Joined, Kangaroo's Tongue Out & Run 'N' of 'ONE' (Second State) 72(4)j u & va, most units are very well centred, some perf separation & reinforcing, Cat $3500++ for two mounted monogram strips of 3 plus a significant premium for the complete strip.
Rough Paper 1d with exceptional Swimming Cap Flaw caused by a basically triangular stray fragment of paper underneath the sheet of paper which has caused the engraved lines in the king's hair (also above 'STR' of 'AUSTRALIA' & at L/L of the Crown) to be clogged, also with full Compartment Line at R. A fantastic transient variety.

1½d electrotype proof in carmine on ungummed surfaced wove paper (42x38mm), hinge-thin behind the crown doesn't impact the very fine facial appearance. Unlisted in the ACSC. Offered 'as is'. [Although appearing to be a die proof, this is an electrotype proof apparently created by masking the adjoining units before the impression was made. Arthur Gray had a similar electrotype proof of the 1d Die III also in red: ACSC 75PP(1), Cat $25,000. Arthur Gray believed the purpose of such proofs was to provide prints of specific clichés that required remedial attention]
Single-Line Perf 5d chestnut 'JBC' Monogram pair with Retouched U/R Corner and Defective 'P' of 'PENCE' & '5' in L/H Value Tablet ACSC 122zg, well centred, the monogram unit is unmounted, Cat $1600+ for mounted, plus a premium for the unlisted states of both varieties: see below..
The ACSC illustrations of [Pos 59] 122ve & vea are apparently identical, both showing the second state. Davidson Dix & Rowntree provide very clear illustrations, from which we have concluded that this example shows an unlisted state of the retouch: neither the corner split nor the notch in the U/R frame is evident. In addition [Pos 60] shows the three distinguishing features of the first state of the Defective 'P' plus an early state of the deformed '5' at left, but not the spur at L/L of the value tablet, a state not identified by either authority.
Comb Perf 5d chestnut 'JBC' Monogram pair with Retouched U/R Corner and Defective 'P' of 'PENCE' & '5' in & Spur from L/H Value Tablet ACSC 123zb, well centred, the monogram unit is unmounted, Cat $1750+ for mounted.
