ARABIA & PERSIAN GULF
Arabia & Persian Gulf
Sale No: 249
Lot No: 2788
Symbol: PS
Cat No: Collection

image 'The Aerogrammes of Eastern Arabia: Illustrating the Modern History of the Region' six-frame exhibit from World War II, through the British Postal Agency period & Britain's withdrawal from the Gulf, the attempts at Federation, Independence of the various Shaikhdoms including creation of the United Arab Emirates, and the modern economic triumphs of Kuwait in the north to Oman in the south. Offered completely intact. As stated on the title page, "It is the historical framework, and not a catalogue, that has determined the selection and treatment of the material".  No fewer than 124 of the Aerogrammes are commercial usages - including several from Dubai during the infamous Private Contract Period - to a surprising variety of destinations, including Afghanistan, Denmark, Finland, East Germany, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia. There are also intra-Gulf usages to Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait & Umm al Qiwain, plus others to members of the Arab Postal Union, to which concessional rates applied. Further rare material includes an essay with double overprint, five items with 'SPECIMEN' punctures, two with the printed stamp omitted, and a couple of registered items. The aerogrammes flesh out the historical background that includes the wartime PAI Force at Bahrain Sharjah & Ras el Hadd in Oman; development of Westernised infrastructure including hospitals, oil exploration and national airlines; political control exerted by the British and their hasty departure; family feuds, coups, counter-coups & assassinations; and the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. There is scope to further develop the exhibit or, alternatively, to re-work it as a traditional postal stationery display. The initial cost, principally from specialist dealers, auctions and eBay, is in excess of $50,000 so our estimate represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a ready-made collection that would be exceedingly difficult to replicate.  (182) (Image1)
