AUSTRALIAN: 1949 (March 12) 'Expedition Antarctique Francaise...' postcard to a ship's captain at Melbourne and re-directed to Hobart, headed from the expedition ship "Commandant Charcot" with message including "We couldn't get thru the icepack to Adelie Land but have called at Balleny Island and Macquarie on the way back", with Australia KGVI 2½d red tied by Macquarie Island cds, 'PER COMMANDANT/CHARCOT' and 'MACQUARIE ISLAND' h/s in violet alongside, Hobart arrival b/s of 21MR49, light central fold. [The expedition was to establish a shore station on Terre Adelie; this was abandoned after 17 unsuccessful attempts during February to find a way through the 40 miles of pack ice between the ship and shore. The expedition landed at Sabrina Islet off Buckle Island in the Balleny Islands on 7.3.1949 and arrived at Macquarie Island on 12.3.1949, returning to Hobart on 20.3.1949]
