image 1945 DUKE OF GLOUCESTER: 2½d dull carmine-lake, 3½d deep ultramarine & 5½d blue-black die proofs on unwatermarked wove paper with huge margins ACSC 233-5DP(1), Cat $12,000 recessed in a single mount. Superb! [The ACSC lists these die proofs in "lake", "bright blue" & "indigo", that is in the same colours as the issued stamps. However, all three proofs - especially the 5½d - are in distinctly different shades. This, of course, makes them all the more significant. Arthur Gray's set in the original mount - the 5½d with a 'tonespot', which is more likely a stain caused by degrading adhesive - sold for £3600] (3)

image 1946 MAJOR MITCHELL: 2½d deep red marginal block of 4, the last unit with the Portrait & 'AUSTRALIA' largely Obliterated by Excess Ink, unmounted. Curious: if this was a doctor-blade flaw, one would expect it to affect at least the adjoining unit above.
