Argyll Etkin Ltd Sale: 53

Great Britain and British Commonwealth
Zanzibar
Sale No: 53
Lot No: 1864
Symbol:

Livingstone/Slavery. 1872 (undated) Four page letter from Lieut. William Henn, R.N. on printed "LIVINGSTONE SEARCH EXPEDITION" notepaper, with good content describing captured Arab slave dhows and the numbers and conditions of the slaves, the way these slave traders deliberately wreck their dhows to escape naval vessels drowning many of the slaves, the discharging of slaves at Zanzibar harbour under the guns of the English men of war who are powerless to touch them under the treaty signed with the Sultan, and the way slave traders and customs officials in Zanzibar leave the weak or ill slaves to drown with the incoming tides. The Livingstone Search Expedition was despatched to Zanzibar in February 1872 by the British Government and Royal Geographical Society to search for Dr Livingstone (who had not been heard of since 1869) but was abandoned in April 1872 when news of Stanley's meeting with Livingstone reached Zanzibar. No cover but a rare and interesting letter, presumably from a former member of the Search Expedition written when serving on a naval anti-slavery patrol.
