EARLY 18th CENTURY TREASURY WARRANT FOR EXPRESS MESSENGERS TO WELSH COUNTIES, ETC.; Very rare 17th May 1708 authorised Treasury Warrant (a double page with usual folds and dusting; a few reinforced edges to folds) for £60 for 5 long journeys made by "John Barrett, one of the Four Messengers in Ordinary at the Recept of Her Majestie's Excheqr." made by Barrett or his Deputy attending "delivering of Divers Parcells of Acts of Parliament...", listing the dates and destinations of each journey from the Treasury in London (Whitehall). This includes a 20-day journey to Wales, including to the Sheriffs of "Montgomery, Merioneth, Carnarvonshire, Anglesea, Denbighshire and Flintshire". Also listing the journeys to 15 named towns in Kent and Sussex ("Canterbury...Sandwich, Dover, Folkestone...Rie, Winchelsea, Hastings, Seaford & Pevensey"; 11 days in all), Herts./Beds./Hunts./Cambs. (7 days), Suffolk/Norfolk (4 places in each; 11 days) and to Essex/Suffolk (4 places in each; 11 days). Approved for payment at the foot by "J. Smith" with further annotations overleaf. Treasury Warrants for Messengers to Wales of any period are much rarer than those for journeys to English towns. Warrants of the 16th century are quite frequently seen, but 18th century examples such as this are much rarer. Cross Reference : EARLY LETTERS, KENT, SUSSEX, SUFFOLK (Image)
