image VERY FIRST 2d 'POSTAGE STAMP' - SILK-THREADS DICKINSON/WHITING "LONDON DISTRICT POST" ESSAY; July 1837 2d Green "V[Crown]R/LONDON/DISTRICT POST" "POST OFFICE COVER" letter-sheet Essay (wear to original folds as usual, some slight scuffs to plain flap); this was produced by Charles Whiting on John Dickinson's silk-threads paper (the threads are only present across the address-panel) and was included only in the 7th July 1837 Parliamentary 9th Report from the "Commission to Inquire into the Management of the Post Office"; the similar 1d Essays were included in the same Report in both envelope and letter-sheet formats and were also included in some of Hill's pamphlets, so they are much commoner than this 2d Essay. Important "First Essay" for any QV or Mulreadys collection. Cross Reference : LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image)

image 'TREASURY COMPETITION' CHARLES WHITING 1d MULTI-DESIGN POSTAGE STAMP ESSAY IN BLACK & RED; Fine 1839/40 se-tenant Postage Stamp multi-design "POST PAID/1d/BEAUFORT HOUSE" + "POST/VR 1D/PAID" + "BEAUFORT HOUSE" Essays strip (Graveson No.18); compound printed in black & red on paper and almost certainly from the famous Essays Plate in Henry Cole's article on Treasury Essays in the March 1840 'London & Westminster Review'. This design is unusual in showing several choices for the Postage Stamp, and was produced in this smaller format when Whiting tried to make the price for his work cheaper 'per stamp'. Much rarer than the larger single Essays by Whiting (Graveson nos. 6 to 14) - presumably because this multi-Essays strip was never reprinted. Seldom offered and lacking from many major collections. [The only other example offered in Cavendish's auctions in the last 20 years was in the 'Rossfield Collection' Jan. 2008 sale; lot 2019, realised £941.] (Image)

image EARLY PROOF OF THE WHITING "JAMES WYLD" LETTER-SHEET ESSAY IN BLUE WITHOUT WORDING; Circa Aug. 1839 (?) Proof of the fancy letter-sheet design produced by Charles Whiting (the finished green examples - two are recorded - have a tiny "WHITING LONDON" imprint adjacent to the grapes in each lower corner) on thin paper (light horizontal crease and slight stains - caused by old gum on reverse consistent with being placed in 19th century printer's proof book? - barely detract). This design has engine-turned panels top and bottom where the words "POSTAGE PREPAID BY" and "JAMES WYLD, Geographer to the Queen" were subsequently inserted. One wonders if this would have proved a more popular letter-sheet design than Mulready's had it been adopted in 1840... Rare thus. [The 'Mike Salmon' example of this blue 'Proof', Cavendish 20 Apr. 2006 lot 448, realised £647.] Cross Reference : MULREADY STATIONERY & PROPAGANDA COVERS (Image)
