Interesting content including Politics (the writer not believing that the Whigs could defeat Van Buren in a general election [he was incorrect]) and fearing possible war with Britain having narrowly avoided a hostile encounter with a "British Man of War". image [Florida] TALLAHASSEE / Flor., not-quite-complete strike of a type VII Nov 9 c.d.s. with a type h "FREE" and a type N "5" on a tan cover to Florida Senator D.L. Yulee in Washington D.C.; a bit soiled but still Very Fine. The "5" was either applied upon determining that the free status of the letter was not valid or prior to discovering that the letter could, indeed, be sent for free—neither marking has been annulled. This is the only recorded use of the type N "5" from Tallahassee; illustrated on page 405,

David L. Yulee was the first Jew to be elected to the U.S. Senate. His inflammatory pro-slavery rhetoric in the Senate earned him the nickname, the "Florida Fire-Eater"
