image 1931, Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans-Arctic Submarine Expedition cover, franked with 8¢ Airmail (#C4) tied by New York GPO duplex of May 8 193[1], with additional King George V 1½d definitive tied by London F.S. Oct. 3 1931 wavy-line c.d.s.; addressed to Bergenfield, NJ, with nicely struck expedition handstamp in violet; "New York to North Pole" printed endorsement at lower left; large heavy paper "hinge" remnant on reverse noted for accuracy, Very Fine, a nice example of this early sub-polar transit attempt.
