NEWCASTLE UNDER LYME - 5th CLAUSE POSTS: 1820-37 collection of ELs with a variety of Newcastle-u-Lyme 5th Clause marks, all in red. Many with Receiving House numerals, noting Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, & 7. We note a 5 Jul. 1824 EL to Congleton with a particularly fine strike of the unframed "NEWCASTLES/5th CLAUSE POST(S)" with what appears to be an 'escaped' "S", also having a v.fine "No.7" mark and Newcastle dated circular mileage mark on reverse. NEWCASTLE UNDER LYME - 5th CLAUSE POSTS IN SCARCER BLUE & BLACK STRIKES: Trio of ELs incl. 24 Mar. 1827 EL to Leek with fine framed "Newcastle/5th Clause Post" in blue (though bisected by crease) overstruck by "No.5" RH mark of Hanley; 30 Jun. 1827 EL to Silverdale with very fine strike as previous, also in blue. Also 17 May 1839 EL to Cheadle, Staffs. with unframed "Newcastle/5th Cl. Post" mark in black, and very rare thus, and having "No1" RH mark (Lane End) in top left corner. "TOO LATE", "MISSENT TO", UDCs, ETC: c.1809-1852 range incl. 26 Nov. 1846 EL from Leeds to Macclesfield with v. fine, two line "MISSENT TO/NEWCASTLE.U.L" in black (apparently unrecorded in this colour), 1809 & 1822 ELs with poor to good strikes of "TOO LATE", 1843 1d pink env. with Newcastle MX cancel, 1840 EL to London with superb strike of "BURSLEM" UDC and a range of mainly imperf. 1d red frankings incl. incl. 1852 env. with bright blue, but indistinct, Newcastle-u-Lyme numeral cancel (fold through stamp).
