image TO ASIA - INDIA - 11d-RATE (3x3d + 2x1d FRANKING) COVER TO SECUNDERABAD, 8d-RATE & 2½d-RATE; 15 Oct. 1887 env. (minor wear; top flap lost) to Secunderabad "via England" with 1d Red (2) + 3d Claret (3) just tied by partial East London Numerals with matching cds nearby; the red crayon "5" shows the 5d credit due to GB for the 5d rate from GB to India and there are backstamps including London (9 Nov.) and a v. fine "SEA/POST OFFICE/F/19 NOV.87". It was then redirected within India to "Kammamell"(?). Fine example of this elusive 11d rate to India. Plus 1892/6 pair of envs. (some wear) to the same Bombay address "via England" with 6d+1d(2) or ½d+2½d - all tied by fine Port Elizabeth cds's. (3 covers) Cross Reference : INDIA (Image)

image TO ASIA - DUTCH EAST INDIES VIA CEYLON - 1s-2d RATE SHIP+PACKET RATES COVER TO BATAVIA; Remarkable 8 May 1875 env. (some wear) from Cape Town to a Dutch vessel at Batavia endorsed "Per R.M. Private Steamer" with 1/- Green + 1d Reds (2; one with fault at top) tied by v. fine Cape Town cds's for the unusual 4d Ship Letter rate to Ceylon plus a further 20d for the Packet rate on to Batavia; the red crayon show the 10d due from CGH to GB for the Ceylon to Batavia route and the m/s "20" on the front is the D.E.I. delivery charge. A most unusual routing and rate; if sent as originally endorsed (by Royal Mail steamer) this letter would probably have taken longer and cost more.
