ON LETTER EX P.M.G.; Remarkable 26 Aug. 1880 letter (minor faults) to "The Post Office Agent, Matjesfontein" from GPO Cape Town signed by the GPO Accountant regarding the £5 sureties needed to take on a PO and returning two 3d stamps, still present in the margin; a vertical pair of 3d on 4d Rose tied by a fine and rare "POSTMASTER GENERAL'S OFFICE/CAPE TOWN" cds (27 Aug., because the stamps went back and forth for a while, according to the filing notes on the reverse of the letter, until the GPO accepted them). It seems that the Agent did become a Postmaster and £1's worth of 3d stamps were sent to him on 7 May. Folds to fit an album page. (Image)

image RECTANGULAR 1/- GREEN BLOCK OF FOUR USED BY MOSSEL BAY POSTMASTER TO REPAY DEFICIENT POSTAGE TO P.M.G.; 20 Mar. 1873 letter (no env.; uneven slightly trimmed margin at left only slightly affecting two perfs.) written and signed by the Postmaster of "Mossel Bay" and sent to the PMG in Cape Town apologising for under-charging 3 letters (2 to GB + 1 to Cape Town; 2 having been sent by the Postmaster himself!) and so enclosing a Block of Four 1/- Greens (in the margin) to pay for it; the stamps cancelled on arrival in Cape Town (tied through block) by a mainly fine "CAPE TOWN/M.O.O." cds. Rare item showing that Postmasters were themselves responsible for underpaid letters' postage if they did not notice the underpayment. Folds to neatly fit an album page. (Image)
