(in French); "This letter is misdirected and intended for Cape Town; it is originally from England or Cape Town actually having reached us pr. Dutch Steamer: how is that?" - a mystery - with varied rates a red London "BRITISH/FOREIGN" overstruck by boxed Cape Town "TO PAY" and backstamps of London and Cape Town; plus colourful 1872 cash-paid env. regd. from Berlin to Cape Town via London, and 1897/1905 PCs pair ex Germany with Cape Town h.s. image COVER EX G.B. ADDRESSED TO "DR. LIVINGSTONE EXPEDITION" VIA CAPE TOWN; Remarkable and very fine 5 May 1848 small env. sent from London with fine 3-ring blue "ADMIRALTY/[Anchor]/C.H. PENNELLY Ch[ief]. Cl[er]k." cachet and "S.W." authorising initials as well as a very fine red crowned London Official Mail "PAID" cds and a red m/s "1" (credit due to CGH); there is a very fine red Cape Town transit backstamp (10 June) and the letter would then have been forwarded to the Expedition (which was at this time already on the Zambezi) overland from Cape Town. It is addressed to the Expedition's official Geologist, "Mr. Richard Thornton", and is recorded in Robson Lowe's 1959 article in the 'London Philatelist' (p.36). Another cover to Thornton, but stamped and addressed to him on the Kilimanjaro Expedition in 1861 realised £3,220 in Cavendish's 20 June 2012 auction (lot 511). [Robson Lowe found a total of only nine ingoing covers to Thornton on these Expeditions in 1959; Robert found this one on eBay as a bargain in 2017!] Attractive and Important cover addressed to this famous Expedition.
