image RARE "UNDELIVERABLE AT/WINBURG" & PURPLE "COMMUNICATION" + "SUSPENDED" COVER EX C.G.H.; Remarkable 20 Apr. 1901 env. (faults) ex "EAST LONDON/C.G.H." (cds tying CGH ½d Green) to "Reitfontein, P.O. Senekal, ORC" with censor's red "P.B.C." + purple "H.P" marks but also with purple "RETURNED LR. OFFICE/BLOEMFONTEIN" cds's back & front (oddly dated 15 & 26 May 1902); also with v. fine purple "COMMUNICATION" and "SUSPENDED" marks on the front and a mainly very fine large black "UNDELIVERABLE AT/WINBURG" (crease) on the reverse. Sent at the unsealed ½d printed matter rate. What happened to this cover for a year?! With copy of related ABWP article. Very rare. image RARE "UNDELIVERABLE AT/H.S." (HARRISMITH?) & "COMMUNICATION" + "SUSPENDED" COVER EX NATAL; 15 July 1901 env. (stains) ex "DURBAN/NATAL" (cds tying Natal 1d) to "Bethlehem [ORC]" with censor's blue "P.B.C." + "NPR" marks but also with black "COMMUNICATION" and "SUSPENDED" mars on the front and a partly fine black "UNDELIVERABLE AT/H.S." (overstruck by "RETURNED LR. OFFICE/BLOEMFONTEIN" cds of 26 Mar. 1902), having a v. fine 2-ring "RETURNED LETTER OFFICE/NATAL" cds on the reverse. Where was this cover for almost a year?! image UNRECORDED PURPLE "INTERDIT" MARKING (OF DURBAN?) ON INGOING COVER TO PRETORIA; 2 Oct. (?) 1899 env. (some creasing etc.) from Genoa to Pretoria with Italy 25c tied by Squared Circle with 4 Dec. 1899 "LONDON" transit backstamp and pink VR censor label, but stopped in Durban with fine 7 Apr. 1900 "RETURNED LETTER OFFICE/NATAL" cds on the front beside a very fine tiny purple "INTERDIT" ("Prohibited") mark (light fold) which must have been struck in Durban - it is in the UPU language of French and the purple colour of such marks used in London and the Colonies. The Italian returned mail cds (23 May 1900) on the front matches the "AL MITTENTE" ("To the sender") mark alongside. This "INTERDIT" mark appears to be unrecorded? TO LAKE CHRISSIE; 5/18 Jan. 1901 pair of envs. ex London (with the same printed address to "Lake Chrissie, TRANSVAAL") with GB 1d Lilac tied by 2-ring cds's (the first has part of the cover torn away at top right - presumably with a stamp?) each with triangular Pretoria censor but both also with a very fine rare purple Joburg "NO POSTAL COMMUNICATION" mark (part of the strike on the first cover lost where piece torn away). This unusual Joburg cachet was applied at different dates when parts of the Transvaal were overrun by the Boers. Marques with CGH 1d(4) tied by Cape Town cds's, but with Durban "OFFICIALLY SEALED..." label and also with exceptional red m/s "Contains an enclosure for Pretoria" on the front - Unique cover? Plus large battered 23 Oct. 1900 env. (opened out; possibly captured by the Boers in transit?) registered to Vryheid with Transvaal VRI o.p. ½d + GB Jubilee 3d Pair tied by v. fine 2-ring British FPO "17" cds's (Joburg) but with multiple censor labels and endorsed at Durban; "Service Suspended" and "Enclosures correct Durban Nov. 5", and much-travelled Jan. 1901 env. ex Germany to Kimberley whence redirected in July 1901 to Roos Senekal with CGH 1d but endorsed in red "No communication" at Pretoria and with 1902/3 transit marks as well as a v. fine 3-ring 1 Apr. 1912 (!!)
