image Pohokura (NU 1894-1963) manuscript cancellations. 1894 (8 Aug & 27 Nov) pair of covers sent to Inglewood via Toko & Stratford (Taranaki). The Pohokura PO had opened 14 May 1894. The first cover has name in full in manuscript, 2nd it is shortened to POH. Some opening faults but a remarkable pair. Neither was known to A.R. Marshall but he does illustrate a late 1901 use of a relief manuscript at Pohokura & this example on a 4d First Pictorial (New Zealand Postal Manuscripts p275) is also incl (3 items). (Image)

Piece attached exactly to a copy of the masthead of "The Illustrated NZ Herald" March 15, 1872. 2) 1d orange-vermilion horiz pair p12½ tied to piece by a barred "O11" (Ahuriri) cancel, & piece attached exactly to a copy of the masthead of "The Hawkes Bay Herald" No 1,036, 1869. Paper mailed to Dunedin. Only 3 FFQ stamped newspapers are known (2008). (Image)

image 1871 Franco-Prussian war cover carried "via Brindisi", since Marseilles route closed due to hostilities. Cover inscribed "first overland mail via Suez and Brindisi" ex Invercargill (cds JU 12, 71) via Melbourne 13.8.71 on the Evoca, arrived London 30.9.71 (red cds). Bears 3d, 6d p12½ FFQs (½oz). Torn flap on reverse. Plus a framed original microfilm produced by photographer Rene Dagron in Tours inscribed "La poste Pigeons Voyageurs du Siege de Paris 1870-1871", a 40x reduced 16 page messaged carried by pigeons into besieged Paris. A world first. Nice condition. (Image)

image 1880s Chinese goldfield covers (x 2), both with ornate, colourful Chinese writing, plus 2014 newspaper clipping detailing the loss of Chinese miners' remains on SS Ventnor in 1902. One cover ex Laurence (cds 8 OC 81) to merchant Shew Hoy in Dunedin bears 2d FSF ("O17" cancel), personal seal in red & instructions in black. The other cover ex Black Diggings goldfield ("144" cancel on 2d, 6d SSF) to a Dunedin merchant. Reverse bears Chinese 'chops' (personal seals) in red plus "Waitahuna 9 NO 82" cds & RTPO Dunedin South (2nd type) cds. Both in nice condition. (Image)

image 1900 (6 July) envelope from Berne to Sydney, bearing 1900 UPU set of 3 with Express cds, missent to NZ due to the lack of a country in the address with "Australia" added subsequently, showing boxed "MISSENT TO / INVERCARGILL" (31 x 8mm) (the sole recorded example of this h/s), with the reverse showing Invercargill cds "R.P.O. DN S/2" TPO (14.8), Sydney (23.8) and Kogarah cds. This mail was sent by northbound train from Invercargill to Dunedin & exchanged with the southbound train at the "crossover" station of Waipahi.
