image MERCANTILE PAPERS - VERY RARE GIANT RED "PETITIONS FOR AN UNIFORM Penny Postage" WALL POSTER WITH WHITING IMPRINT; May 1839 large (35 x 51.5 cms.) folded "Penny Postage..." wall-poster printed in red with "Whiting, Beaufort House, Strand, London" imprint at foot (decorative engine-turned frame reduced all round but not affecting the text; professionally and skilfully rebacked due to some creasing and other faults resulting in very small text loss at bottom centre). The detailed text is headed with giant lettering; "PETITIONS FOR AN UNIFORM Penny Postage LIE HERE FOR SIGNATURES" gives the wording for Petitions to Parliament, but also adds the call to arms addressed to “MOTHERS & FATHERS… FRIENDS… EMIGRANTS… FARMERS… MERCHANTS & TRADESMEN… [and] MECHANICS & LABOURERS”. This example is not from one of the few remaining souvenir sets of 'Mercantile Papers' (MCP), but is an even rarer survivor, being a poster that was circulated at the time (presumably resulting in the faults). We are only aware of three other examples of this poster in private hands, all from MCP sets. [See MCP3/10 in James G-T's "International Postal Reforms" volume 1, pp.320-322.] We have no record of an example of this Poster having been sold at auction during the last 35 years; two examples of the similar but much smaller version - MCP3/09 - sold at auction for £3,906 or £3,306 in 2009 & 2016 respectively. Large but very Spectacular Exhibition Piece for any Postal Reforms Collection. [Never before offered for sale as far as we are aware.] Cross Reference: UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE PERIOD (Image)
