image Nigeria: Southern Nigeria: Anglo-Aro War 1901-02: 1902 stampless envelope from Canadian officer Lt. A.L. Ross of the Northern Nigeria Regt. to Canada, endorsed "No stamps available" and "Aro Field Force", self-endorsed at lower left with Forcados River Feb. 9 and Hamilton Mar. 15 receiving c.d.s's. A very scarce campaign cover sent by Arthur Leith-Ross (1877-1908), who during the Boer War had stowed away on the S.S. "Sardinian" in order to join the 1st Canadian Contingent, had volunteered for this and the Ashanti Expeditions, and who later became Chief Transport Officer of the Protectorate and married noted English anthropologist and writer Sylivia Leith-Ross (née Ruxton) before succumbing to blackwater fever, is commemorated today on the first soldier's memorial in Palmerston, Ontario.
