P.M. BURG TO UMSUNDUZI CUT-SQUARE 1st-ISSUE EMBOSSED 3d COVER VIA DURBAN FORWARDING AGENT; Very fine 24 Jan. 1859 env. (with contents) was sent from “P.M. Burg” to “Umsunduzi” (an American Mission station up-country, some 30 miles north of Durban) via a Durban Forwarding Agent (“G.C. Cato”). It was prepaid for the internal 3d rate with a mainly legible Embossed 1st-Issue “NATAL/[Crown]/ THREE/PENCE” 3d pink (c.27x35mm with varied margins, huge at top; pre-usage crease near foot) tied by a light oval “POST OFFICE/P.M. BURG” mark. The addressee, Rev. L. Grout, wrote a memoir of his Mission service “Zulu-land or Life Among the Zulu-Kafirs” in 1864 - in which he noted that "My Mission of Umsunduzi, lies about fifteen miles from the sea, and twice that distance north from the Port of Natal" - and "The Autobiography of the Rev.
