image TIME-CLOCK "TIME WHEN POSTED" FLAP 1d RED COVER EX LANDPORT/PORTSMOUTH; Fine 28 Dec. 1871 env. (opened out for display) from "LANDPORT/CHURCH RD." (cds on reverse) to Droitwich with 1d Red (pl. 136?) tied by a very fine "PORTSMOUTH/625" Duplex; the flap has a very attractive printed blue embossed clock-face with "A.M." and "P.M." either side and "TIME WHEN POSTED" beneath, leaving the clock's hands to be inserted by the sender. In this case no clock hands have been added. Under the flap is the imprint; "MANUFACTURED BY DE LA RUE & Co./FOR WILLS & SON, SOUTHSEA". One of very few recorded examples of this 'keep the Post Office honest' envelope intended to prevent unnecessary delays to letters. Cross Reference : HAMPSHIRE (Image)
