(fragile, opened out) to Ireland endorsed "Via Marseille" franked 3 x 1d Red Stars tied by London "37" numerals with large fine "POST OFFICE/JY 29/1854/BRITISH ARMY" ds on back with original correspondence detailing daily life for the officer class; Aug. & Sept. 1854 two cross-written letters (no covers) with more pressing details - "Again getting settled in a new camp, having left the last one on the score of its being unhealthy. We noticed a rank smell...and yesterday a number of men went to hospital." and "...an attack on the Crimea having been determined...we are to land men and officers with three days provisions and forage - nothing more than we can carry ourselves, one horse, our servants to be mounted in the ranks."; Aug. 1854 part env. endorsed "Via Marseille" franked 3 x 1d Red Stars (one defective) tied by London "47" numerals with large fine "POST OFFICE/AU 24/1854/BRITISH ARMY" ds on back with original correspondence headed "Five miles south of Varna" detailing preparations for action "Lord Lucan...has put down the churn handle to grasp the sword. "The mail came in here yesterday and was carried on to Baltschik to the fleet...yesterday morning, before the mail could have left Varna, we saw the whole fleet...steaming out of Baltschik Bay, towards the Crimea, looking like a huge flight of locusts in the distance." Accompanying letter dated 24 April contents headed "Camp Kadikoi" regarding "By the time you get this it will not be news to you. We opened fire this morning...dark, grisly, rainy - it has not left off raining...At first, the Russians faced three to our one - in the afternoon, not one to our twelve." Similar env.
