Lot No: 1081
Symbol:
1 Anna on 4a brown, manuscript surcharge with initials "A.B", mint left marginal single, the surcharge in a differing hand to the usual surcharges (possibly the same hand used for many of the S.G.22 ½ anna surcharges), with the surcharge and "A.B" initials clearly in the same hand. With a 1975 letter from the dealer Peter Dickinson giving the opinions of Roy Dunston and Stuart Rossiter on this stamp, Dunston being of the opinion that a clerk wrote both the surcharge and initials (and not Archibald Brown), and the stamp is therefore not a forgery, but also not a genuine "A.B" initialling. An intriguing stamp. S.G. 26var. Photo on Page 146. (Image1)
