image INDIAN MUTINY - ACCOUNT OF THE CAPTURE & EXECUTION OF MUTINY LEADER, TANTIA TOPE; 19 Apr. 1859 letter (no env.) from a junior officer in the British East India Co. Army at "Goona" [Guna, central India] to his father (Charles Leslie of Drung, Co. Cavan, Ireland) including; "Tantia Topee was hung yesterday at 5 p.m. at Sepree [a nearby British cantonment]... Maun Singh gave himself up the day we left Meade's Force, & Meade worked on him & made him promise to give up T[antia]. T[ope]. He went out one evening with Meade & a party of the 9th N[ative]. I[nfantry]. & took them about 16 miles to Parone, where we had been for a fortnight in Feby. Maun Singh left Meade & the 9th in the jungle & went by himself into the village. In the morning he came out & told Meade that the bird was there & said; 'When we go into the House I will shake the right man in a friendly way as if to waken him & then you can seize him, but take care not to hurt me'... As soon as Maun Singh had given him a shake, Meade jumped on top of him till he was tied. He had only seven men with him who all bolted. They put T.T. on a horse & took him back to Camp. He confessed to having been at Cawnpore, but said that both he & the Nana tried to prevent the massacres but were unable to restrain the Sepoys. He was to have been brought here, but it was afterwards settled to take him to Sepree & try him there. The first thing he said when he was taken was to be blown from a gun at once...". Remarkable account of the end of one of the most famous of the Mutiny leaders. Cross Reference : MILITARY (Image)
