CHARLES DICKENS AUTOGRAPHED ENVELOPE TO HIS SON WITH 1d RED & BLUE OVAL "C.D." FLAP DEVICE; 11 May 1865 env. (light vertical fold clear of autograph and stamp/cancel) sent locally in London with 1d Red (pl. 86; perfs. cut carefully top and bottom - by Dickens himself presumably? - to match the stamps' actual design) tied by a "LONDON W.C." Duplex with red "LONDON E.C." arrival cds (of the same day) on reverse. The letter was addressed to Dickens' son; "Charles Dickens Esquire Jun[io]r" and boldly signed "Charles Dickens" at lower left in the distinctive blue ink that Dickens always preferred to use. The envelope also has an embossed blue double-oval "C.D." device on the flap (opens up for display; closed tears & traces of old paper mount do not detract). Rare example of a Dickens cover sent to a member of his own family. Charles Culliford Boz Dickens Junior (1837-96) failed as a businessman in the 1860s, but then became a reasonably successful author and writer. [A similar 1854 cover - but to an unrelated author - realised £1,054 at auction earlier this year.] Cross Reference : AUTOGRAPHS, 1864-79 1d PLATES (Image)
