image BARNSLEY TO PENISTONE POSTMASTER'S LOCAL 2d POST SERVICE CHARGES; 1833-1839 range of ELs (all different years except two of 1837) on display pages evidencing the unofficial mail service from Barnsley to Penistone, provided by the Postmaster at an additional charge of 2d; inc. Nov. 1837 EL from Barnsley originally charged 1d in manuscript with a m/s "3" indicating the addl. 2d charged by the Postmaster, also examples of mail from further afield incl. London & York. A good set of 'increased' rates; 6 to 8d, 7d to 9d (2), 5d to 7d (6d crossed out), 10d to "1s", and 4d to 6d (2; one with Sheffield red boxed "TOO/LATE" as well ). The May 1837 double-weight letter from Leeds to Penistone charged "10" attracted only a single 2d charge for the last leg Barnsley to Penistone. Mostly v. fine.
