Oct. 1840 E (side-flaps removed) to Nottingham with fine Plate 4 1d Black (HD; 4 close to very wide margins showing parts of frames of the two stamps on each side) tied by a mainly fine red Alfreton Maltese Cross with partly fine black "ALFRETON" cds on the lower flap. The Alfreton Maltese Cross (see Rockoff & Jackson, vol. 1, p.36) became distinctively clogged by May 1841; only two or three covers with the red Alfreton MX have been recorded. Attractive cover. MISSENT CASH-PAID COVER - "Missent to Belper" ENDORSEMENT EX MATLOCK BATH; 6 May 1840 EL (some reinforcing internally) from Matlock to Rotherham endorsed "paid" with manuscript "1" and mainly very fine "MATLOCK BATH/1840/MY 6" cds (central date inverted as usual for this P.O. in early 1840) on the front but also endorsed "Missent to Belper" on the front. Plus colourful 11 July 1852 piece with a 1d Red (PL? - 3 good margins; into at foot) tied by a lovely strike of the "MATLOCK BATH" cds in BLUE (also unique as a cancellation as far as we are aware) with a tiny part London (?)
