image VERY EARLY INGOING LETTER - FROM "PENRYN" TO "ST. MARY'S ISLAND, SCILLY"; 10 Sept. 1790 EL (year deduced from contents; one side-flap removed and with edge wear etc.) from "Penryn" (Cornwall) to "St. Mary's Island, Scilly" with v. fine "PENRYN" on the front, charged "4" to Penzance "to be left at Mr. Savers's" whence carried by fishing vessel to the Scillys. The contents include "Last Night's paper brought the welcome news of Capt. Goodall being promoted to Admiral of the Blue", which proves that this letter (dated only "Sept. 10th") was sent in 1790. Samuel Granston Goodall was promoted in 1790; with copy of 23 Sept.1790 'Bath Chronicle' note to that effect. One of only two ingoing covers prior to 1800 with postal marks that we have recorded (the other being dated July 1790 and from the same correspondence). Ingoing covers of any kind addressed to the Scillys prior to 1840 are very rare. Cross Reference : CORNWALL (Image)
