Montserrat, 1930 (Jun 6) First Airmail, Plymouth to British Guiana, Registered cover with boxed "First Air Mail/ Montserrat" cachet and franked with 1s4½d postage (including a 1½d Leeward Is.) tied by Jun 6 Montserrat c.d.s.s; backstamped at Georgetown, British Guiana on Mar 5, 1931 with an additional strike of the flight cachet on the reverse., Very Fine. Only 19 covers were destined for Georgetown. Muller 1/6.
Covers, intended for various destinations were canceled June 6, 1930 in readiness for the seaplane air mail flight, which was delayed by bad weather and, in effect, postpones. The British Navy cruiser, H.M.S. Dorsetshire, visited Montserrat in February 1931 and on leaving left behind her seaplane. When the plane flew to re-join her ship at St. Kitts, the mail that was originally prepared for the June 1930 flight was taken aboard and flown to Basseterre, St. Kitts, arriving on Feb 23. The covers were then forwarded by surface mail to their original destinations. (Image)
