image 1846 Stampless Cover from (later) Gov. of PA, blue folded letter signed "Bigler/Senate" at upper right with blue "HARRISBURG/Pa./APR/14" cds ccl and blue "PAID/5" hs in hexagonal box addressed to Josiah W. Smith Esq/Clearfield/Pa.". Letter dated Apr. 12, 1946 from (and signed by) William Bigler (1814-1880), who was at that time a State Senator (1841-47), was Governor 1852-55, U.S. Senator 1856-61 and Pres. of the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad (1855-?). This letter discusses a proposed bond and that Josiah (as the Senate's attorney) ask Mr. Wallace "to give a judgment in our favor for an amount sufficient to secure us, which you, will, therefore, have the kindness to do." A sinister line includes that "If he should refuse to do anything we then desire to adopt the most summary manner of forcing him to comply." Time to play political hardball, eh?
