In her May 20 letter, Annie Gould writes of the havoc and violence perpetrated by the Boxers, particularly in reference to the railroad between Peking and Paotingfu:
"I was to have started for mission meeting today but the Boxers didn't let me. They objected to having French soldiers sent to Peking and as the railroad facilitates the moving of troops they proceeded to tear up part of the road, burned 8 stations and a bridge & cut the telegraph wires….
The man with whom the Boxer movement practically originated is intensely anti-foreign. Originally, he suggested it to the people of his district as a scheme to protect themselves against bandits. Later it took on the anti-foreign spirit and now has assumed these proportions. The man was removed from being governor of Shantung because the foreigners pressed for it, but he has been made overnor of Shansi…
Recently at a town on the Railroad where there were a good many Boxers one Gen Yang went up to investigate matters. They fired on him killing his horse. His bodyguard fled & was killed. A relative who went to investigate his death was also set upon & killed by the Boxers. We shall see what comes of all this.
A few days ago a good many soldiers, Chinese, but foreign trained, arrived in Paotingfu to protect the city….
Last Monday after the R.R. was torn up the French who are in charge of the R.R. all left. Some of the ladies insisted and prevailed against the better judgement of the men. So they left, 30 of them, on 2 boats with a guard of 50 soldiers… They may get away safely but the Boxers will send word down the river and attack them on the way to Tientsin."
In the May 31 part of her letter, Annie Gould provides news about the Boxer Rebellion's effects on Paotingfu and reflections on her strong faith and commitment, in terms of her own mortality:
"Mary heard… that the Boxers have sworn to kill any foreigners they can lay hands on. Along the river therefore it will be doubly dangerous. Yesterday Mr. Wu, a superintendent of examinations or some such rank, a man who is on very good terms with the foreigners, advised Mr. Bagwell in a roundabout way to leave before the Boxers get any hotter against us. We don't want to leave…. there are about 1000 Boxers in Paotingfu now to say nothing of the numbers in villages around. What can the few soldiers do, especially as the soldiers would not fire on the Boxers to defend us. I can't see through a matter like this. We may be killed and our property looted, or we may escape by the skin of our teeth. God knows. My head believes in God's knowledge and that we can't be hurt against His will, but I can't say that I have any deep heart faith. It is intellectual faith. Just so I know perfectly well the possibilities of danger but generally speaking it does not weigh on me.
I can't tell you exactly what I fear, not death, not even violence at the hands of a mob, for the physical suffering would be over soon, and God could give strength for that. I think that it is that I feel in my daily life I am a slave to myself, my appetite, my selfish ease & such like and the thought that I am daily led captive without half a struggle keeps me in a slough of Despond most of the time and I rise out of it by throwing it off and unthinking, indifference. It is that that is my nightmare I can't pray with any faith or hope…. I feel like a hypocrite most of the time and I see my work through the bluest of blue spectacles. I simply can't put thoughts on paper. I am going to try again. If I live I will send you another letter soon…. If not on earth, we'll meet in heaven again."
Ironically, this was the last letter which Annie Gould sent to her father (docketed "261 The last") before she was captured by the Boxers on July 1 and murdered.. Est. HK$6,000-8,000
