Clear sharp purple cds and target duplex (SON-3820, R5) on 1874, 3¢ green entire to San Francisco, with "Penns Grove, Cal." docketing at left, Very Fine and choice, the only recorded and exceptional example of Penngrove's first postmark.

Established as Penn in October 30, 1882, the name shortly changed to Penn's Grove on August 3, 1883. This unique postmark falls between this short first period. The name was finally changed to Penngrove in 1894.
