image Ecuador, 1865, 1r Deep Green, Two Vertical Pairs. From the second printing, right pair positions 81/90 with the latter showing colorless spot in bottom right spandrel and broken frameline at lower right. Clear to large margins, neatly tied by "Guayaquil, 27 Abr, 66" cds's on folded letter to to Lima, Peru, reverse with clear "Peru, 2 May, 66" receiving cds, Very Fine, external mail bearing the 1r green is much scarcer than the latter 1r yellow issue, ex-Longhi, with 2011 Moorhouse certificate.

The great majority of maritime mail to Peru before the autumn of 1866 was carried through the British P.O. at Guayaquil without involvement of the Ecuadorian mail. This is one of the few covers known in this period not entering the British P.O.

Margins large to just touching, all tied by "Cuenca, 13 Dec, 65" cds's and matching dotted lozenge handstamps on Judicial wrapper to Loja, pencil "1L 4oz" weight notation at upper right; cover flaws including tear at left and reinforced file fold, some tone spots affecting stamps, F.-V.F., ex-Bustamante and Goeggel, with 2014 Moorhouse certificate.

Ample to huge margins showing portion of adjacent stamp at left, positions 89-90 with full embossing on right stamp which extends slightly into frameline of left stamp, plate flaws in position 90 showing colorless spot in bottom right spandrel and broken frameline at right, tied by neat "Guayaquil, 13 Mar, 66" cds on fresh folded letter to Lima, Peru, receiving backstamp, Very Fine and choice, one of less than five recorded examples of the 1r green embossed arms variety on cover and one of the earliest usages to a foreign destination, ex-Funkhouser and Longhi.

AN EXTREMELY RARE USAGE OF THE 1R GREEN WITH EMBOSSED ARMS USED ON COVER TO A FOREIGN DESTINATION.

A considerable portion of maritime mail to Peru before autumn of 1866 was carried through the British P.O. at Guayaquil, without the involvement of the Ecuadorian mails. This example being one of the exceptions in this period not carried through the British Post Office.

Margins ample to just in at top left and upper right, partial separation cut between bisect and block, canceled by unusual manuscript "Cariaman-g-a" town name cancel on Judicial wrapper to Loja, "14oz" weight and reverse with "Agosto 25, 1870" date notations; few tears in wrapper at top, otherwise Very Fine, a very uncommon origin and unique usage, ex-Saá and Olgieser, with AFE certificate.

Margins large to in at top, canceled by "Latacunga" provisional box cancels on oversized Judicial wrapper front to Riobamba, red crayon 14oz weight notation, Very Fine, this Latacunga pre-adhesive postmark was used during the first half of 1865, fewer than ten recorded usages of this provisional handstamp used as a cancelling device, ex-Olgieser.

Tied by "Guano, 16 Sept, 65" cds and matching lozenge handstamp on Judicial front and part backflap to Riobamba, turned usage back to Guano with 1865, 1r green, vertical pair and single with pair affixed over "De Oficio" boxed handstamp and tied by "Riobamba, 27 Sept, 65" cds's and lozenge handstamps; some slight soiling affecting pair and single, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Saá.

The erroneously applied "De Oficio" handstamp would have exempted the wrapper from postal fees, a privilege which was not applicable to civil judicial matters which benefitted from the reduced parcel rate but not from exemption.
