"Pensacola Fla. Apr 12," (1865) cds and bold "Due 3" straight-line on envelope addressed to "Maj Cutler/ Comdg Post/ Marianna Fla", ms "OB" (official business) at upper right, the Marianna post office was not re-established until October 2 so this went to Apalachicola (100 miles south of Marianna) where the postmaster wrote "Please send the 3cts due on this letter to this Post Office -- Apalachicola Fla. Sept. 25th E. Keilmansegge P.M.," envelope slightly reduced at right and small nick top right corner, Very Fine, a appealing early Reconstruction-era military cover demonstrating the postal system challenges in mail handling; pictured in Briggs pg 52 and Confederate Philatelist Vol 35, No 6, pg 213rnAfter the war, The Federal Post Office at Apalachicola was re-established on September 25, 1865 with Eugene Keilmansegge as the postmaster. This cover represents a first day of usage under the re-established postal system. The cover was probably carried by ship to Apalachicola as, at the time, there was no direct mail service to Marianna had been established. The Marianna post office did not reopen until October 2, 1865 which can explain Keilmansegge's request for the 3c: there was no receiving postmaster in Marianna to collect the 3c due on the letter.rnMajor Cutler was a battalion commander in the 2nd Maine Cavalry which saw service in Florida during 1865. "Quincy Flor Aug 18," (1863) cds ties 1863-64 5c Blue (11) on envelope addressed to "Surgn T (Thomas) M Palmer CSA/ Florida Hospital/ Richmond Virginia," stamp three margins, envelope missing backflap, Fine and rare use to the Florida Hospital; illustrated in Briggs pg 215rnEach of the Confederate States were required to fund hospitals for their wounded troops. The "Florida Hospital" was in the building of the former Globe Hospital on 19th Street in Richmond and the former tobacco factory of James H. Grant and Company built in 1853. It was in operation from June 1862 through September 1863, with a capacity of about 150, when it was consolidated with other hospitals. Dr. Thomas Palmer was surgeon for the 2nd Florida Infantry prior to being appointed supervisor at the Florida Hospital. The hospital's sponsor was Mary Reid, the wife of Florida's ex-Territorial governor. (Image)
